Natural beauty, history, and innovation, seven unforgettable places that show the magic of living in NC

In my experience, these are the seven wonders of North Carolina so far.
Whether you're a long-time resident, a newcomer, or considering making the move, North Carolina is home to some of the most stunning and unique places in the country.

Of course, there are many other beautiful spots, especially here in Winston-Salem, where I live, like the peaceful Reynolda Gardens and other local gems. But we will save those for another time.

1. 🌿 Biltmore Estate, Asheville

Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Biltmore is America’s largest privately owned home. Built in 1895 by George Vanderbilt, this château-style mansion spans over 175,000 square feet and is surrounded by spectacular gardens, a working vineyard, and breathtaking mountain views. Walking through its halls feels like stepping into a European fairytale.

2. 🚢 Battleship North Carolina, Wilmington

Moored along the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, the Battleship North Carolina is one of the most decorated U.S. Navy ships of World War II. Today, it stands as a powerful floating museum where visitors can explore nine levels of history, from the engine room to the bridge. Walking through the narrow corridors and seeing where the crew lived, worked, and fought brings history to life in a way that’s both humbling and unforgettable.

3. 🌊 Outer Banks and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

Along the Atlantic Coast lies the Outer Banks, a chain of barrier islands with unspoiled beaches, wild horses, and a sense of serenity that is hard to find elsewhere. Towering above it all is the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in America, guarding the Graveyard of the Atlantic with its iconic black and white spiral.

4. 🪨 Chimney Rock State Park

Rising 315 feet above the valley floor, Chimney Rock offers one of the best panoramic views in the entire state. From the top, you can see Lake Lure, rolling mountains, and even the horizon on a clear day. Whether you hike up or take the elevator, the reward is unforgettable.

5. 🌲 Great Smoky Mountains National Park – North Carolina side

Shared with Tennessee, the North Carolina side of the Smokies is rich with dense forests, wildlife, and Appalachian culture. With over 800 miles of hiking trails and misty mornings that give the mountains their name, it is a place of wonder for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

6. 🕰️ Old Salem Historic District, Winston-Salem

Step back in time and explore one of the most beautifully preserved colonial communities in the country. Old Salem brings history to life with cobblestone streets, restored homes, and costumed interpreters who share the story of early Moravian settlers. It is a living museum that still feels like a real town.

7. 🐘 North Carolina Zoo, Asheboro

The largest natural habitat zoo in the world, the North Carolina Zoo covers over 2,600 wooded acres in the heart of the state. Home to more than 1,700 animals from Africa and North America, this zoo provides immersive, educational experiences for visitors of all ages. Unlike traditional zoos, animals live in spacious, natural-style enclosures that mimic their native habitats. Just an hour from Winston-Salem, it’s a must-see destination for families and wildlife enthusiasts exploring North Carolina’s wonders.

💬 Living close to the wonders

This list is based on personal experience and the stories shared by clients and locals throughout the state. If you know of a hidden gem or a special place in North Carolina that deserves to be featured here, I would love to hear about it. Feel free to share it in the comments or message me directly.

🏡 Ready to explore your next chapter in North Carolina?

Living in Winston-Salem means you don’t have to choose just one dream; you can live in a vibrant, welcoming city and still explore all the wonders North Carolina has to offer. From peaceful mountain views to a thriving downtown lifestyle or beachfront serenity, everything is within reach. Whether you’re looking for your first home, a vacation getaway, or an investment opportunity, there’s a perfect place waiting for you, and I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
